Common Misconceptions About Training at Round 1 Fitness

If you’ve ever hesitated to join a gym or try a new fitness program, you’ve probably had a few doubts or preconceived notions holding you back. At Round 1 Fitness, we’ve heard it all—so let’s bust some of the most common misconceptions about training here. Spoiler alert: You don’t need to be a super-fit gym junkie to start (or love) your fitness journey with us!

1. “The Sessions Are Too Hard”

Yes, our sessions are designed to challenge you, but they are not supposed to be a test of survival! Our coaches tailor every workout so that beginners and seasoned athletes can work at their own pace. Whether you’re smashing out 20 push-ups or starting with 5, the goal is the same: progress. You’ll be amazed at how quickly you’ll build strength, endurance, and confidence.

Are the coaches tasked to make sure the regulars continue to push themselves and improve?  Of course…do the rules that are ‘applied’ to them also apply to someone in their first session?  Of course not…

Translation: You don’t need to crawl out of the gym every session to see results. Just showing up and giving your best is more than enough!

2. “Everyone is Super Fit, and I’ll Feel Out of Place”

We get it—it’s intimidating walking into a new gym. But here’s the reality: we’re all on different fitness journeys, and no one is judging you. In fact, most of our members remember what it’s like to feel nervous at the start and will be your biggest cheerleaders.

Our community is made up of all ages, sizes, and fitness levels—from people doing their first-ever burpee to those who’ve been training for years. The one thing we all have in common? We’re here to improve, one session at a time.

3. “Everyone in the Strength Gym Lifts Super Heavy”

Our strength gym might look impressive, but you don’t need to deadlift 200kg to belong here. The focus at Round 1 isn’t on how heavy you can lift—it’s about building good habits, form, and consistency.

Our Functional Fitness and Peak Performance classes are structured to suit every level. If you’re just starting, we’ll help you nail the basics with lighter weights and proper technique. And if you’ve been training for years, you’ll find plenty of ways to keep progressing.

Side note: You’re far more likely to hear someone celebrating their first set of push-ups than boasting about a heavy deadlift.

4. “I Need to Be Fit Before I Join”

This is one of the most common misconceptions. The truth is, you don’t get fit to join the gym—you join the gym to get fit! Everyone starts somewhere, and the hardest part is often walking through the door for the first time.  And we totally understand that walking through the front doors IS a big step!!

Once you’re here, you’ll have coaches guiding you and a community of members cheering you on. Whether you’re returning to exercise after years or trying it for the first time, we’ve got your back.

5. “Boxing Classes Are for Fighters”

You don’t need to be a boxer to benefit from our BoxPlus and BoxFit sessions. There’s no sparring involved, and you won’t be throwing punches at anyone except a bag. Boxing is an amazing way to relieve stress, build fitness, and feel unstoppable—no experience necessary.

Pro tip: There’s nothing more satisfying than hitting a bag after a long day. Trust us.

6. “If I Miss a Session, I’ll Fall Behind”

Life happens, and missing a session isn’t the end of the world. We encourage consistency, not perfection. If you’re showing up 2-3 times a week, you’ll be making great progress. And if you miss a week? No stress—just pick up where you left off.

Remember: fitness is a lifelong journey, not a sprint.

7. “I Don’t Know the Technique—What If I Do It Wrong?”

This is a big concern for many new members, and it’s one we’ve taken seriously at Round 1 Fitness. Whether it’s lifting weights or throwing punches, mastering the right technique is essential—not just for safety but also for confidence and long-term progress.

For new members, we offer a 5-session structured 1-on-1 On-Ramp program to teach you the how before you jump into classes. We actually offer two separate on-ramps – one focussed on Boxing, the other focussed on Strength training:

  • Lifting Skills: Learn how to do the basics – we will teach you to squat, press, and deadlift etc with proper form.
  • Boxing Technique: Master the basics, from stance to punching combinations – and learn how to do other common exercises in our boxing sessions such as kettlebell swings and a range of body weight activities.
  • Training Confidence: Understand the flow of sessions so you feel prepared and capable.

The On-Ramp program is all about building your foundation. By the time you step into your first class, you’ll feel confident, equipped, and ready to train alongside others.  For more info, book a free consult:  https://round1fitness.com.au/free-consultation/

Final Thoughts

At Round 1 Fitness, we believe fitness should be accessible, welcoming, and, dare we say it, fun. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about showing up, trying your best, and celebrating the wins along the way.

So, if you’ve been sitting on the fence, let this be your sign: You belong here. Forget the misconceptions, and give it a go. We promise you’ll be surprised at just how capable (and supported) you are.

Ready to get started? Book your first session today, and let’s crush those doubts together!
