The ab wheel is a piece of exercise equipment used for strengthening the abdominal muscles. It consists of a wheel with handles on either side, which the user rolls back and forth on the floor while maintaining a plank position. This exercise targets the rectus abdominis, obliques, and lower back muscles.
I know, not all of us enjoy the ab wheel, and we would rather do sit ups when we have the option!! But before you dismiss it at your next workout, here are a few things the humble ab wheel can do for you that sit ups can’t:
- Work more muscles: the ab wheel will work out up to 20 different muscle (if you’re doing the exercise correctly)
- Contribute to your balance and coordination as the wheel is not a stable piece of equipment
- Strengthen your core by using all the abdominal muscles, and so doing, help to reduce lower back pain (great if you’re sitting at a desk all day) and improve your posture
- Improve your breathing by the requirement to focus on breath during the exercise, the abdominal stretch and elongation of your spine.
So next time, choose the ab wheel! Your body will thank you for it.
