Big news: Round 1 Fitness is officially a HYROX Affiliate!
That’s right—we’re stepping into the global world of Hyrox, the ultimate test of functional fitness, endurance, and strength. If you’ve been part of our SPARTA program, you already know the kind of challenge we’re talking about. Now, we’re taking things to the next level.
What is HYROX?
HYROX is the World Series of Fitness Racing—a combination of endurance and strength-based challenges designed to push athletes to their limits. It’s a race-style event where competitors take on a 1km run followed by a functional fitness challenge, repeated eight times. The movements include sled pushes, rowing, wall balls, and lunges—things we already love doing at Round 1.
Why Are We Making the Change?
At Round 1 Fitness, everything we do is about building a foundation of grit, endurance, and strength under fatigue—the exact qualities needed for success in HYROX racing. Our training philosophy has always focused on creating well-rounded fitness that helps you handle any challenge, whether it’s in the gym or on race day.
Last year, we modified our SPARTA program to give athletes a platform to prepare specifically for HYROX-style racing. It provided structured sessions designed to help members develop the stamina, strength, and mental toughness needed to thrive on race day.
Now, we’re taking that commitment one step further. By officially transitioning to a full HYROX program, we’re offering a more targeted approach that aligns with the global HYROX movement. This shift brings world-class training and a clear pathway for anyone looking to compete—or simply level up their fitness.
What else? Well – when I participated in the HYROX event last year, I quickly became aware that our gym aligns so perfectly with the HYROX activities…we have LOADS of rowers, LOADS of ski-ergs, multiple 25m sled tracks, Wall Balls, Kettlebells, marked running tracks (though a little more paint is probably needed!!)…we’re ready to go. Talking to other athletes at the event who were talking about not being able to practise sleds at all (as in, had never pushed one more than 10m), were doing burpee broad jumps outside in the carpark…it just seemed to make sense. Now, I still don’t have everything setup PERFECTLY for these classes – I am sourcing the sandbags for the lunges at the moment which is the biggest issue right now (and yes, I know the wall-ball targets are a little tougher at Round 1 than in the race) but of all the gyms in Perth we are one place that really has the equipment and gym space to run these sessions.
What’s ACTUALLY Changing?
Well – we’re going to run HYROX specific training sessions at Round 1 each WEDNESDAY and SATURDAY.
- Firstly, we’re ‘TWEAKING’ the Peak Performance sessions each Wednesday and turning them into HYROX “POWER” sessions. These classes are VERY heavily aligned and for people who want to LIFT and then do a workout featuring POWER movements with Barbells, Dumbbells, Kettlebells and Sleds…well, it’s going to be awesome.
- Next, our SPARTA class each Saturday will turn into a full HYROX “Fundamentals” session. These Fundamentals classes tend to use a large number of the HYROX movements (Lunges, Rowers, Skis, Farmers Carries etc)…sounds like the existing SPARTA program right. Well, there’s probably a bit less cardio in the ‘Fundamentals’ sessions than ‘SPARTA’ regulars are used too…our plan is (as the race draws near) to add ANOTHER HYROX class each Saturday (the Hyrox “ENGINE” class which is all cardio, all the time) but just want to start in the shallow end!
Who Is It For?
Whether you’re training for a Hyrox event or just want a killer fitness challenge, these classes will push you further. No, you don’t have to be an elite athlete to train Hyrox—it’s scalable for all fitness levels. If you enjoy grit, endurance, and full-body strength work, you’re going to love it.
Ready to Train Like a Hyrox Athlete?
Our first official HYROX classes start in the week commencing MARCH 17th. If you’ve been doing SPARTA or Peak Performance, you’re already on the right track. If you’re new, there’s no better time to start. Hyrox classes will be available to all ‘old school’ members who have strength class access as part of their subscription – and of course to all ‘new-style’ memberships as long as it fits within your class count.
For anyone new to the gym, HYROX specific memberships will be made available in the next week or so if those are the only classes you are interested in doing…
Lock in your first HYROX session now and get ready to push, run, row, and grind your way to a whole new level of fitness!
