Tip Tuesday – Benefits of Remedial Massage

BENEFITS OF REMEDIAL MASSAGE!

There are many different recovery modalities and treatments, all of which should be secondary to managing your training plan, nutrition, sleep, and stress. If you’re experiencing a particular muscle tension or chronic pain, remedial massage may be a helpful strategy to optimize your recovery. I’m usually not a big fan of getting massages but recently I may have been converted! Different from a relaxation massage which is a pain-free way to loosen up your body, remedial massage therapists are trained to assess and treat musculoskeletal conditions.

Remedial massage treatment may involve deep tissue work, trigger point therapy, and myofascial release. Remedial treatment can also help to relieve conditions such as sciatica, carpal tunnel, stiff joints, headaches, and sports injuries. A remedial massage therapist works on your major muscle groups as well as your connective tissue, tendons, and ligaments to promote recovery. They will also observe changes over time and adjust your treatment plan to address certain injuries, postural, or joint issues.

Massage increases blood flow to the tissues which can improve circulation, lymphatic drainage, and help to eliminate toxins. By releasing muscle tension around the joint, massage may help to increase mobility, and improve muscle function. This might be beneficial if you sit at a desk all day, and experience tension in your neck, shoulders, or lower back. Repairing damaged or knotted muscles and tendons will help enhance recovery and improve athletic performance. Regular treatment can also play a role in injury prevention, physical performance, and maintaining optimum health.
