In 2024, I entered HYROX solo with exactly zero preparation. It went about as well as you’d expect. By the fourth run I knew I was in deep trouble, and unfortunately I was right. To be fair, I’d signed up knowing full well it clashed with the footy finals. I was 99.99% sure I wouldn’t even get to the start line. But when the season turned out better than expected and we had HYROX weekend off…well, suddenly I was in. Sadly, “no prep” wasn’t exactly the smartest race plan, and the event went exactly the way “no prep” events usually do.

This weekend, a big crew from Round 1 will be lining up at HYROX Perth — and we couldn’t be prouder of the work they’ve put in over the past few months. But while race day is one highlight, it’s not the end of the journey. HYROX at Round 1 has always been about more than a single event — it’s about building long-term fitness, balancing new ideas with our Round 1 traditions, and making sure there’s a pathway forward for everyone.

Starting September 1st, we’ll be running our End of Block Testing sessions across the Functional Fitness program at Round 1. You’ll see familiar lifts like front squats and push presses, pull-ups, rows, and maybe even that one movement you’ve been avoiding (yes, we see you). But here’s the thing—testing isn’t a gimmick, a one-off, or a break from training. It’s the beating heart of long-term strength and conditioning. Let’s talk about why.

Let’s be honest—most of us want everything from our training. Stronger. Fitter. Leaner. More mobile. Better recovery. Lower stress. Oh, and if we can get a six-pack and dunk a basketball while we’re at it, that’d be nice too. With so many different outcomes on our personal ‘wish list,’ it’s no surprise that balancing strength and conditioning becomes a bit of a juggling act. Some days you just want to lift. Some days you just want to sweat. Some days you’ve only got 30 minutes and you’re not even sure where to begin. So… how do you structure your training for long-term success?
