This Sunday, East Perth plays in our second consecutive WAFL Grand Final. Now, I know some of you already know that I work with the footy club — but a lot of people probably don’t. Most days, I leave the gym in the afternoon and head straight to training, team meetings, or match reviews. In fact, coaching at this level is a solid 20-hour per week commitment — and that’s on top of running the gym.

In 2024, I entered HYROX solo with exactly zero preparation. It went about as well as you’d expect. By the fourth run I knew I was in deep trouble, and unfortunately I was right. To be fair, I’d signed up knowing full well it clashed with the footy finals. I was 99.99% sure I wouldn’t even get to the start line. But when the season turned out better than expected and we had HYROX weekend off…well, suddenly I was in. Sadly, “no prep” wasn’t exactly the smartest race plan, and the event went exactly the way “no prep” events usually do.

Since early June, our Strength Gym crew has been smashing their way through a progressive 5-rep block. We’ve built strength week after week with rep schemes dropping from 8 to 7 to 6 to 5 — all while layering in carefully selected accessories and barbell finishers to build muscle and reinforce movement quality. This week (August 25–31) is our deload — a much-needed chance to pull back on load, move with intention, and set up for success in the next phase.
