    It’s getting busy

Hi and welcome to another week,

Last week was the busiest week we have had since opening, and it was very pleasing to see so many people take advantage of the 10 sessions for $50 offer we had running at the end of September.  I hope (obviously) that each of our newbies has a terrific experience at Round 1 Fitness (that is what I hope for everyone of course) and that whether you are doing classes or using the gym we are able to help you meet your goals.

If you ever have any comments or questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to contact me about it, either by replying to one of these messages or directly when you are at the gym.  I can’t promise to fix everything, but I can promise to listen and see if there is any way I can help.
Anyway, on to this weeks update.

    Outcome focussed or Effort focussed?

With so many new faces in the gym recently, I have found that there is a lot more negative ‘self-talk’ happening in the gym.  A lot more people saying “I can’t do this” and “This is too hard”.

The interesting aspect of this – for me anyway – is that these comments (usually) mean that the person cannot do the exercise with 100% competency, not that they can’t TRY to do it.  If your entire focus is on the outcome – being able to do 10-complete push-ups with both hands on the medicine ball for example, or hold a bridge for the full 2-minutes – then you might be right (in the short-term in any case).  But isn’t doing 3 push-ups, resting for 10 seconds then trying again a worthy first step? Wouldn’t it be better to say ‘I am going to do this’ and trying rather than saying ‘I can’t do it’ and not trying?  Or even better, saying ‘I am going to do 3’ (or whatever it might be – give yourself a target) and getting stuck in – just having a go – than deciding to do nothing at all?

The other thing to consider is the impact your words might have on the people around you.  If you are stating that you can’t and someone else is struggling, they might also decide it is too hard and give up. And when they stop, that really advocates the same behaviour for someone else – so now your thoughts, words and actions have impacted the training of not just you, but several other people around you.

I feel like all of these little emails keep coming back to the same theme – that persistence and effort are the keys.  That being positive about what you are doing and what you are trying to achieve is important – and that just refusing to give up/give in is the key to you achieving your goals.  When things get tough, focus in on exerting as much EFFORT as you can rather than being concerned about what the outcome is – focus in on just having a go, as hard as you can for as long as you can…then stick at it just a bit longer – rather than what it looks like or what you think other people might think of your efforts. With this positive approach, your gains (and those made by people around you) will come all the more quickly.

    Update on the Gym

There has been a fair bit of work going on lately – I think having the extra barbells available has been a real bonus for the classes and it has been great to see a few people using the 40kg dumbells as well.  From an environmental perspective, having the 3 fans up and running has been good – will be even better this Wednesday when the other 2 are installed – and whilst the battle to get the benches and cabinets installed in the change rooms goes in the background on I hope the temporary solution I have put in place goes some way to solving the problem.  The issues with the lights a couple of weeks back seems to have now been  resolved, and whilst I can think of better ways to spend $1500 at least they are all working. month – over 35/under 35 men/women.

So, get some practice in and get ready for November. Anyway, that’s it from me for another week.

    See you in the gym.
