December ’19 Timetable Change – Body Work

    Hi Team,

I am just writing to you all today to let you know about a class/time-table change that we will be implementing from the start of December:

Class Change:  Body Blitz  will become Body Work

    Times Impacted:  7pm Mon-Thurs, 7am Friday

First things first…what is ‘Body Work’ (for those people who don’t know).

Body Work is the ONE class that we run on the ‘Boxing’ side of the gym that doesn’t have any ‘Boxing’ in it.  I guess you could call it a ‘High Intensity Interval Training’ class that utilises a range of different strength equipment (barbells, kettlebells, dumbbells, med balls, dead balls, Olympic rings etc) and cardio equipment (SPARC, Bike, Rower, Ski) AND body weight activities all wrapped up in a pretty ‘challenging’ 45-minute session.

It originally ran pretty regularly on our time-table and it has always had its share of fans – but it became a bit marginalised for two reasons:

Firstly, it developed a ‘scary’ reputation that was very off-putting for new people (too hard, too complicated).  I have never really understood this because – if anything, the fact that in Body Work you are moving through the class at your own pace rather than the relentless ringing of the bell – these sessions are often easier to get through than the boxing ones.

Secondly, some of the people who were ‘lovers’ of Body Work moved off into classes that featured more strength work (what was Tanks and No-Rules in the old days, what is Functional Fitness in today’s language).

Anyway, between these two things we were kind of left without an audience.  But as always, times change.  Now, the 7pm-8pm time-slot has always been a tricky one to fill at our gym.  It is ‘the witching hour’ in a lot of households (dinner time, kids going to be etc) and we have always found an audience at 6pm and 8pm…not so much at 7pm.  So Body Work ‘slid’ to 7pm to try and give people who “didn’t want to box” a reason to ‘get to the gym’ at that time.  Earlier this year we merged ‘Body Work’ with ‘B+ Boxing’ (a boxing class that has NO strength work) to create ‘Body Blitz’ – a class with two streams, one strength based and another boxing based.

Over the past few months, it has become pretty evident that the ‘boxing’ part of our 7pm session is simply not being used.  Everyone who comes to this ‘time’ of course wants to train ‘together’…and the consensus of the group has been to do the strength based version of the session.  Which (of course) is fine!

Given that this is a ‘different’ option on the timetable and people wanting to do a Boxing class have options at 5am, 6am, 7am, 9:15am, 12pm, 4pm, 5pm, 6pm and 8pm (or NINE other time options) throughout the day, we have made the decision to remove the ‘boxing’ option from the 7pm class and revert to ‘BODY WORK’.  As I have noted a couple of times, it is a positive session, it is a ‘different’ type of workout to Boxing and it does provide a little bit of a pathway to Functional Fitness sessions if there are people out there looking to see if a ‘bit more’ strength work might be the thing for them.

Anyway, that’s it.  We are swapping one class for another at 7pm.  Check the time-table for all of our session details!
