My Goals

I want to be able to do a 100kg squat, improve deadlift weight and technique and learn the more complicated moves like snatches and power cleans etc.

Training

Most days and random times - whatever fits in with my schedule.

First Class

My first ever class was a beginners class on a Saturday and I remember it clearly because I was so impressed that Elie remembered my name! I thought it was pretty good so I turned up to a regular boxing class and yep that was a big mistake, almost passed out halfway through the class and had to go outside to recover. Pretty embarrassing but the guys in that particular group were really nice and encouraging (what I love most about this gym). I thought I could only get better from here so the next class I went to was a 7am class and there was only two other people in it, absolute torture! Mike shouting at you is pretty intimidating but that’s what I love about the 7am classes now :)

Most memorable class

Accidentally coming to a 4pm Bodywork class and doing deadlifts for the first time, couldn’t walk properly for a week! Kind of love the Bodywork classes now…

Favourite exercise

Squats, Deadlifts, Rowing and Tyre flips :)

Most hated exercise

The stupid Ski-ergs and farmer's carries.

Advice to share

I don’t think I have ever been this fit in my life and it’s because of this gym, I couldn't recommend it enough! The classes are hard but they are so fun, it’s the people and amazing trainers that make Round 1 so unique so my advice is to join and become an addict like I am now. :-)

My Goals

To lose the extra weight gained after having the two kids and to be a happier, healthier me. It is now my time, time to do something for me.

Training

Monday to Friday 5am sessions.

First Class

My girlfriend found Round 1 on a Scoopon and recommended that my husband (Joe) and I give it a go.  We had been talking about joining a gym, so thought why not. So went to the beginner class, within 10-15 minutes we were doing a wall sit, which seem to go forever. I looked at Joe and said “What the hell are we doing? I am going to kill her, this is insane”. I don’t remember anything else about that class or how I pulled up afterwards. But the next day we were back again.

Most memorable class

No single class stands out always love the extra push the trainers give. And sometimes I do need that push.

Favourite exercise

I love a little of everything, punching, cardio, weights and even squats.

Most hated exercise

ASSAULT BIKES, they are just plain evil. I would do anything not to get on them. EVIL!!!

Advice to share

Push beyond the intimidation and just go for it. Nobody is judging you.

My Goals

The major fitness goal is to be as fit and healthy as possible to make sure I can keep up with my 2 kids :)

Training

3-4 times a week, mostly in the mornings to get the body moving and mind active.

First Class

Beginners class - Wednesday night (sore for 2 days after!). (Editors note:  Clarke says Wednesday but it must have been a Tuesday night if it was Beginners...the experience must have been so exciting that he completely forgot which day it was!).

Most memorable class

All of them! They all are so different and never the same which is why I love the challenge Round 1 offers.

Favourite exercise

Combo of a cardio exercise and punching.

Most hated exercise

Bikes…. Need i say more.

Advice to share

Giving it 100% at every session has seen me achieve amazing results even if its only 3 times a week. Really enjoy the team at Round 1 Fitness but it always come back to the effort you put in.

My Goals

For the past few years I had been blaming a little gremlin for breaking into my house and replacing all of my jeans with smaller ones but then I realised that 1 stressful job + 1 divorce + downward cheese and wine spiral = 1 chubby unhappy Aleks. Hence, I first joined Round1 to lose the weight that I had slowly gained over the course of a few years. My goal is to get back to looking and feeling like myself before the big 3 0 next year! My long term goal is to make exercise a part of my life, I’ve always hated exercise with a passion so it’s been rewarding finding something I actually enjoy coming to and I hope to continue to develop that passion. I might even be ready to compete in one of those Cross Fit competitions in about 10 years’ time haha.

Training

Mostly 8pm sessions. Sometimes 6pm. I’ve made some good friends at Round1 so we try to organise times where we can train together. I aim for 3-4 sessions per week and my goal is to get to 5 sessions a week.

First Class

Tuesday night beginners. I had spotted Round 1 on my commutes to work and wanted to give it a try however; I had seen all the fit people working out in the mornings and thought it was way out of my league. I swear I spent about 2 weeks just reading these profiles on the website and psyching myself up. I had read so many stories about how scary Michael was and how pretty much everyone was puking their guts up after their first class so it’s safe to say I was terrified to try it. I finally built up the courage and made it to a Tuesday beginner’s class; to my dismay – Michael was taking the class. However, once we got going I had the best time! Michael was hilarious and very helpful and I hadn’t had such a good workout in years! The class was a variety of techniques and cardio/body weight training. I got through it fine but the next morning…. well…. let’s just say that you will discover muscles that you never knew you even had!

Most memorable class

Memorable in the worst way possible. It was a Friday 5pm “Beginners”. Eden was running the class and as there were only two of us and as we weren’t beginners he decided to do a bit of a PT session instead. It started off with a HBR then a HBR in-between every station then a HBR to finish things off. I have never come so close to murdering someone before….

Favourite exercise

I love, love, love Sally. Sally squats, Sally sit-ups, Sally push-ups, Sally leg raises – love them all! Rowing is also an all-time favourite.

Most hated exercise

How much time do you have….. haha Half Bin Runs (HBR) and split jumps have to be the worst I would say. Assault bikes (invented by a sadist) were also my nemesis at the start but now that my fitness has improved we are in more of a love/hate relationship. Oh, and those bear crawl things…. I am way too unco for that.

Advice to share

Stop reading these and just bite the bullet! You will be extremely sore after your first session but I found that the best thing to do is not to skip the next day. Once you warm up again you won’t feel the pain. It’s also important not to take any time off. I took 3 weeks off over the Christmas period and it was like I was starting from scratch when I got back into it. On a side note - I had wasted so much money over the years on gym memberships that I would never use and I thought Round1 would be the same; but it’s not! The trainers are fantastic; the atmosphere is fun and best of all it’s a team environment where people actually talk to one another (I know, crazy concept). If you are self-conscious about joining a gym, haven’t worked out in a long time or just generally don’t know where to start when it comes to exercise then I definitely recommend Round1.

My Goals

It used to be cracking the hour in the City 2 Surf, but I’ve done that now (55:43 is my best time to date). These days I’m not working towards any specific goals, but improving my strength and cardiovascular fitness would be nice.

Training

I like to get in 2-3 sessions each week - weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings are my favourite training times.

First Class

A boxing class run by Jason, one of the old trainers. I pushed myself way too hard at the start and was ready to pass out after the first ten minutes!

Most memorable class

I once turned up to a Body Work class mainly focused on legs - so many squats - I couldn’t walk properly for about five days afterwards!

Favourite exercise

Anytime we are doing combination punching.  I also like to run so bin runs are great!

Most hated exercise

I was never a fan of multi-jumps or jump squats BEFORE my knee injury...now I am really not a fan (but they are getting better).

Advice to share

Whether it’s training, diet or work - try to get into good habits. Getting started is often the greatest challenge.
