Round 1 Members are…, Go for Jo Day, June Special

Hi and welcome to another week,

It is two weeks since I blogged – and I kind of missed it!  Whilst the classes in the gym trucked along and between footy, family and gym the time has flown by, somehow the weekend doesn’t seem complete without sitting in front of a computer screen for a few hours trying to figure out what the heck I am going to say.  Or rather, first I spend two hours trying to figure out an interesting anecdote or story that I think someone, somewhere might find interesting, then I delete all of that and spend 15 minutes writing down some stream of consciousness ‘get it done’ type story filled with grammatical errors and publish it on the website without taking the time to review it!  I am sure that there are better ways to blog but that is my strategy and I am sticking too it!

This week though I have a plan.  With Lloyd off on his weightlifting course (see Gym Update 3) this weekend, I have been thinking a lot over the past few days about exactly what Round 1 is.  And, given I have just received a new batch of R1 Member Profiles (look for them on the website this week) as an extension to what Round 1 is, who are our members?  I was hunting around on this theme which led to the link of the week (Who we are is why we win)…in any case. here goes:

Round 1 is a gym which gives people the opportunity to train their way. Group training, small-group training, personal training – or just looking to do their own thing (be that cardio, boxing, kettlebells, weights or Olympic/functional training) depending on how they feel.  Our Boxing-based classes will always be the heart of the gym – and are certainly closest to my heart as the best way to improve your fitness AND strength – but there is equipment available to support almost ANY training methodology you can think of!

Round 1 Members train HARD!  Rarely do they ‘walk’ or ‘jog’ on the treadmills.  They push themselves – in the classes, in the weights room, on the cardio gear – and get the benefits of doing so.  They often don’t have a lot of time to train…so they try to make the most of every moment they have at the gym.

Round 1 is a gym where you never know what to expect.  Every day you go there you will do something that is a bit different to the day before and the day before that.  And you might be sore – or tired, or grouchy – but you will be asked to give it your absolute best every time.  No half efforts and no giving up.  (Or you can do burpees!!! :-) )

Round 1 members support and encourage one another.  Whether it is a good morning smile through sleepy eyes at 5am or a ‘You can do it’ during a Beginners session at 8:30pm at night, you can always depend on the person training next to you to help you through the session.  (But if they keep talking to you then THEY can do burpees!!! :-) )

That is it.  I had a few other notes scrawled down but really what I wanted to say is that Round 1 Fitness is a gym for TRAINING filled with people who are there to TRAIN.  The gym is filled with gear – training gear – and whilst the gym isn’t pretty the walls are just perfect for writing up exercises in chalk.  It really is as simple as that.

Gym Update #1 – June Special

Our June special is up and running – and for the first time ever we are offering our Round 1 packs – Bag, Bag Mitts, Wraps and a Towel – for sale…and not only that, we are offering them at a discount price.  Valued at $70, these packs are available for just $39 when you join Round 1 (or renew your membership) during June.

Now, for you 12-month members, don’t worry – you still get your pack for free…but if you want a second pack – and let’s face it, if you do three classes a week you will need new gloves and wraps before the year is out, and you can never have enough towels – then this month you can get all of that for an extra $39.

Gym Update #2 – 7th July is the ‘Go for Jo’ Cancer Fundraiser

Keep the date, keep the date.  July 7th @12pm, July 7th @12pm.

On the 7th of July – starting at 12pm – we will be having a bit of a fundraiser, fun-day at Round 1 to raise money for the Cancer Council as part of the ‘Go for Jo’ campaign.  Without going into too much detail, one of our favourite members was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and some of her friends started up a Fundraising page in her name around the ‘Run for a Reason’ event.  The link to the page is HERE:  http://hbfrunfundraising.com.au/go_for_jo

Now – the ‘Run for a Reason’ fundraising is open until July 31st – and to help we have decided to do our own fundraising through the gym:

-         A ‘Train the Trainer’ auction was held through the Round 1 Facebook group – with more than $800 raised to torture each of the trainers in a 30 minute session.  These sessions will be run starting at 12pm on this day!

-         A few of our members have volunteered to ‘Shave for a Reason’ and will be losing their locks on the 7th – again, starting at 12pm.

There will be a sausage sizzle happening, there will be some door prizes on offer and maybe some other stuff if we have the time to organise it.  Our hope is that as many people as possible can get over to the gym on the day from 12pm on the 7th, throw in a few dollars to watch the trainers get tortured or the heads get shaved, maybe buy a sausage or two and generally help raise some money for cancer research.  See you on the 7th!

 Gym Update #3 – ‘8 Days a Week’ Challenge is GO!

The challenge is on and we are more than a week in.  I am not sure about you guys, but so far I am STRUGGLING.  Missing classes through footy and work – I haven’t been able to train on either of the two weekends so far this month – and am therefore sitting on a measly 4 classes for the month.  Goodness knows how I am going to ‘Get it Done’ but I suspect head down, bum up and taking advantage of every chance I get to train will probably be the best approach!

Not sure about the challenge ‘rules’ – well, it works like this:

Part 1:

During the month of June, you must complete a session on each ‘day’ of the week – meaning one session on a Monday, one session on a Tuesday, one on a Wednesday etc.  These sessions do not have to be consecutive but by the end of the month you must have done a class on each weekday.

Part 2:

In addition to completing a class on each ‘weekday’, you must also complete a pre-defined number of classes to complete the challenge:

Level 1:  Must complete 21 sessions during June.

Level 2:  Must complete 23 sessions during June (including at least ONE Body Work class).

Level 3:  Must complete 25 sessions during June (including at least THREE Body Work classes AND one TANKS session).

What do you get for completing the challenge?  Well – nothing really…but you do have the right to wear a “GET IT DONE” t-shirt which you can order from reception for $30.  These shirts are ONLY available upon completion of the challenge…if you don’t finish the challenge, you don’t get the shirt!

Just on that, everyone who you see in the gym wearing a ‘Get it Done’ t has successfully finished one of our challenges in the past…I know that I have 3 of the shirts (so far, I have done every challenge myself though I haven’t always ordered a new ‘T’) and have to admit I wear the things like a badge of honour…getting through the challenges takes planning and commitment and is truly something to be proud of.

Gym Update #4 – Olympic Weightlifting Expanding

I have hinted at this in the past, but our TANKS area expansion is becoming imminent – two (2) more power racks and benches will soon be installed.  From there we will be looking to add extra platforms etc and continue to expand the ‘barbell’ component of our gym.  Our hope is that if you are thinking functional training – particularly functional strength training – whether it is barbell based, kettlebell (we sure have a lot of them) based or body-weight based (our 7m chin-up bar is pretty cool!!!) then Round 1 will be your solution.

To further support this expansion, Lloyd has been off this weekend attending his Club Weightlifting / Sports Power Coach Level 1 certification.  This course is only run in Perth a couple of times each year and is limited to 8 participants – we were thrilled to get a spot and even more please to be able to increase Lloyd’s coaching ability in this area.

Really looking forward to the information / technique tricks he can show each of us when it comes to all forms of Cleans, Snatches and Jerks…can’t wait!

Gym Update #5 – CrossTrainer is (finally) Fixed

Thanks everyone for your patience with this one.  The LifeFitness Cross Trainer was out of action for nearly 4-weeks whilst we waited on delivery of a new processor board – it is back in action now though and seems to be better than ever.  Another reminder though to please be GENTLE with the equipment.  It is very expensive and even more expensive to repair (the Cross Trainer repair bill exceeded $1600) – so please think of others and take care.

Gym Update #6 – 5am is Alright!

As a few regulars have noted, we now run 5am classes on Wednesday and Friday mornings.  I have committed to the regulars that if we AVERAGE more than 12 participants for 4-weeks, then I will add an extra 5am session each Monday morning.  As things stand, there are usually around 9 people at the sessions – so if you are interested, or you have a friend who you know likes to get it done early in the day, 5am might be the session for them.

Gym Update #7 – Round 1 Fitness Dream-team and Footy Tipping

Well – by missing last week’s blog I (thankfully) missed the chance to be a sore-loser…but will offer a belated congratulations to Roly for beating me in Dreamteam last weekend.  A measly 22 points was the difference in the end, and whilst I am not bitter (well, not TOO bitter) I still can’t believe the number of points I left sitting ‘on the bench’.  No matter – this week is going much better for me and even though there is a game tomorrow it wont matter when it comes to the final result:  VICTORY!

As for our tipping contest, well – this week is not going well.  When I saw the results I figured ‘everyone’ would be in the same boat as me…well, it seems NOT.  Good work to everyone sitting on ‘4’ so far (it is 3:30pm as I type this) and I hope the rest of the weekend falls your way as well.  On the leaderboard, Ross retains his 2point lead over Lloyd, Steve Mc and Kimbo.
